The Jazz Bakery is a very special musical space in Los Angeles. They have helped launch the career of newcomers as well as brought legendary names to our community. It is a work of love. The Bakery is a place to learn about and enjoy music in an environment for real music affcionados. One can listen to the best from straight ahead Jazz to Latin, to Brazilian, and fusion. Who can forget the performances of Dori Caymmi, Luciana Souza with Romero Lubambo, Rafael Rabello, Helio Alves, Chico Pinheiro and Anthony Wilson, Poncho Sanches, Mulgrew Miller, Terance Blanchard, Greg Osby, Stefon Harris, and many others. Ruth Price has a vision and an established tradition in providing good music that can be trusted. The Bakery is not only a place for music, it’s a cultural institution ! A delightful one….

The Jazz Bakery is one of those rare places in the country where you can enjoy world-class live jazz, from all over the world, week after week. We are very fortunate to have The Jazz Bakery here in the Los Angeles area. Thank you Ruth Price!! I have so many years of wonderful Jazz Bakery performance memories. Some of the ones that stand out are Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, Roy Hargrove, Jerry Gonzalez, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Wlaton, etc...
But one of the most memorable experiences was watching Kareem Abdul Jabbar come up to the stage and sit-in on congas with the Dave Valentin band one night. All that were present enjoyed that tremendously. Â
The Jazz Bakery is an essential contribution to Los Angeles Jazz culture. It is critical that we continue to support it. www.jazzandblues.org

Thinking back over many nights spent at the Jazz Bakery gave me an opportunity to reflect on the common thread that tied those evenings together: the shared experience of a community of jazz fans seated in a quiet listening space hearing an unparalleled array of talented singers and instrumentalists of all ages and backgrounds. The one night that stood out most in my memory came from an elder statesman of the jazz world and took the form of a Christmas gift. Ruth Price booked Bill Henderson to perform on a Christmas night a number of years ago. As might be expected on that holiday evening, the room was only about a quarter full, but there was an immediate bonding experience among those who were there that created a magical atmosphere, which Bill must have sensed when he took the stage. His performance captured that magic and the rapport he built with the audience was immediate, lasting throughout the evening. The singer, the songs, the music, and the humor joined together to form an unforgettable Jazz Bakery Memory. |
